Silent Night

Need I say more?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WZI4g7qKrg

Here are the Lyrics…

Silent Night
Holy Night
All is calm
All is bright
Round yon virgin
Mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Silent Night
Holy Night
Shepeards pray at the sight
Glory streams from heaven afar
Heavenly ? sing hallelujah
Christ the Savior is born
Christ the Savior is born

Silent Night
Holy Night
All is calm
And all is bright
Round yon virgin
Mother and child
Holy infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace

Merry Christmas

Another year has gone by my friend
Yes, Christmas time has arrived again
With more joy and happiness this year
Less sorrow and pain but happy cheer
With friends that know and care about me
Gifts that surround the Christmas tree
But it hasn’t always been this way
When times were bad every single day
But through the pain you were always there
Even when there was no one who cared
For through it all I can say I was loved
Peaceful memories that I can think of
So, glory to Christ for this day that is dear
Merry Christmas to all and happy new year!

Hey, maybe I’ll dye my hair
Maybe I’ll move somewhere
Maybe I’ll get a car
Maybe I’ll drive so far
That I’ll lose track
Me, I’ll bounce right back
Maybe I’ll sleep real late
Maybe I’ll lose some weight
Maybe I’ll clear my junk
Maybe I’ll just get drunk on apple wine
Me, I’ll be just
Fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down
I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow get me way down
Hey, maybe I’ll learn to sew
Maybe I’ll just lie low
Maybe I’ll hit the bars
Maybe I’ll count the stars until dawn
Me, I will go on
Maybe I’ll settle down
Maybe I’ll just leave town
Maybe I’ll have some fun
Maybe I’ll meet someone
And make him mine
Me, I’ll be just
Fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down
I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down
I’ll be fine and dandy
Lord it’s like a hard candy Christmas
I’m barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won’t let
Sorrow bring me way down
'Cause I’ll be fine
(I’ll be fine)
Oh, I’ll be fine

Boldly going where no one has gone before.

Now before ya’all get your selves into a real tizzy, yes I know the name of this thread and yes I will post a version with lyrics… But this is good :exclamation: Shockingly good :open_mouth:

All right, this is another version with lyrics, not necessarily traditional in delivery, but from a very distinct and tradition group.

A couple of small tidbits: The original Irish Rovers were the group that did ‘The Unicorn Song’ and yes, your eyes are not playing tricks on you, that is an accordion in that picture

Here are the lyrics. As you can see there are many verses that are rarely used.

God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan’s power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

In Bethlehem, in Israel,
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came;
And unto certain Shepherds
Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

“Fear not then,” said the Angel,
“Let nothing you affright,
This day is born a Saviour
Of a pure Virgin bright,
To free all those who trust in Him
From Satan’s power and might.”
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

The shepherds at those tidings
Rejoiced much in mind,
And left their flocks a-feeding
In tempest, storm and wind:
And went to Bethlehem straightway
The Son of God to find.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

And when they came to Bethlehem
Where our dear Saviour lay,
They found Him in a manger,
Where oxen feed on hay;
His Mother Mary kneeling down,
Unto the Lord did pray.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Now to the Lord sing praises,
All you within this place,
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace;
This holy tide of Christmas
All other doth deface.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Angels WE Have Heard On High

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CMa_VopbKY

From Wikipedia… The words of the song are based on a traditional French carol known as Les Anges dans nos campagnes (literally, “The Angels in our countryside”) composed by an unknown author in Languedoc, France. That song has received many adjustments or alignments including its most common English version that was translated in 1862 by James Chadwick, the Roman Catholic Bishop of Hexham and Newcastle, northeast England. The carol quickly became popular in the West Country, where it was described as ‘Cornish’ by R.R. Chope, and featured in Pickard-Cambridge’s Collection of Dorset Carols.[1]

There is also a Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) translation of the carol which is known as Ainglean chuala sinn gu h-ard (literally, “Angels We Have Heard on High”). This was translated into Gaelic by Iain MacMilan from James Chadwick’s English translation. It has since been re-translated by world-renowned bassist Joseph Schlegel and his cohorts the Rowdy Bunch. It has been said that this translation spurred a Christian revivalist movement in the north metro area of Denver, Colorado.

Gloria in Excelsis Deo! (Latin for “Glory to God in the highest”)

Lyrics

  1. Angels we have heard on high

Sweetly singing o’er the plains,

And the mountains in reply

Echoing their joyous strains.

(Chorus)

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

  1. Shepherds, why this jubilee?

Why your joyous strains prolong?

What the gladsome tidings be

Which inspire your heav’nly song?

  1. Come to Bethlehem and see

Him whose birth the angels sing;

Come, adore on bended knee

Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

As an aside, you may want to look up Laura and her husbands story… Brain tumor and all the stuff that goes with it. We all have problems, but hey…

Randy, you posted: First, some humor, from sunilbali.com/blog/:

Thanks, I just now had a chance to look at some of it.

Not trying to hijack my own thread, but in reference to Randy’s post about humor, there is a post about a talk Steve Jobs gave… Forrest Li said: He took to heart Jobs’ advice to “Stay hungry, stay foolish and follow your heart”. :open_mouth:

That to me is what the Gospel is all about.

Thanks Randy

Hey!

I was having a business dinner once with one of the owners who proclaimed himself atheistic. It was Christmas time and he was in a very jovial mood. He asked everyone at the table, " Don’t you just love Christmas! It’s my favorite time of the year; everyone is just so different."

Yea. We are, aren’t we, thanks to this season(ing).

Personally, I need to watch A Charlie Brown Christmas each year before I can feel it. Linus’ soliloquy brings tears to my eyes every time, without fail, and I am there.

So, I love Christmas music. I feel especially eclectic at this time of the year and have amassed a Christmas CD collection from nearly every genre of music.

My favorite Christmas album, (apart from the classic Joan Baez Noel and the very classic Merry Christmas by Bing Crosby) is Rob Halford’s Winter Songs. Halford, the lead singer for Judas Priest, whom I’m sure many here know, or know of, wrote a few new songs for this album (Light of the World is especially poignant), but mostly he covers the classic Christmas songs - about Jesus - not Santa or Rudolph. And I feel the conviction he sings into them. It is not a typical heavy-metal Christmas album.

This is his cover of, What Child is This? Note that he includes the often omitted fourth stanza.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FccHGngOGDE

What Child is this who laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet
While shepherds watch are keeping

This is Christ the King
Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring Him laud
The Babe, the Son of Mary

Why lies He in such mean estate
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through
The cross be borne for me, for you
Hail, hail the Word made flesh
The Babe, the Son of Mary

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh
Come peasant, king to own Him
The King of kings salvation brings
Let loving hearts enthrone Him

Raise, raise a song on high
The virgin sings her lullaby
Joy, joy for Christ is born
The Babe, the Son of Mary

Rob Halford – vocals
Roy Z – guitar
Metal Mike Chlasciak – guitar
Mike Davis – bass
Bobby Jarzombek – drums
Ed Roth – keyboards

Then, of course, there’s Trans-Siberian Orchestra… The best thing to happen to our celebrations of Christmas in a long, long time…

Joy to the world
The Lord has come
Let earth
Receive her king

Now it was long ago
When it all began
Back in Bethlehem
In the promised land
When a single star
Appeared in the sky
And three kings saw
And they each asked why
Asked why…

And they checked the books
Full of prophecy
And the one king said
Why it’s plain to me
You see it means
That a king is born
Who will save mankind
On this blessed morn
Blessed morn…

So they packed some gold
Myrrh and frankincense
On some old camel
With some fancy tents
Closed down the house
Set the servants free
And three kings rode
Into history
History…

It was long ago
In a foreign land
When the Lord looked down
Said to make a stand
So He sent His son
And said, *‘through him you’ll know me!’
You’ll know me *

Then the angels came
And when they start to sing
All at once the past
It doesn’t mean a thing
And the star comes out
And the wise men say, Hey show me!
Oh, show me

And they followed it
Over hills and sand
Til’ they found the child
Like it all was planned
And as they knelt before
The newborn king
The angel’s were singing
In their angel style
How all of our hopes
Had come down to this child

Christmas means more to me than it ever did for knowing that Jesus can and will redeem all of humanity, not just a few chosen ones… Let Earth Receive Her King!

I just barely got over the 352 tubas!! And now a singer from Judas Priest! And it’s all good stuff!!

This thread is enlarging my sense of Christmas.

Thanks for posting this one from Simply Three. I’d not heard of them. Very energetic and skilled playing.
You know, I often wonder what reaction Hayden, Bach & Scarlatti, et.al. would have toward our modern interpretations of “Classical” music. Several rock stars are now composing classical music. A recent one was Kip Winger under the name C.F. Kip Winger. It’s a *really *good 'un. I don’t know, of course, but I think any of the Bach’s would like Deep Purple.

Thanks for posting the Rob Halford video :exclamation: Quite a departure from ‘Breaking the Law’

I think accomplished musicians welcome changes and new versions of their work, as long as the rights issues are looked after :open_mouth:

DaveB… I was listening to NPR last night and apparently, the tuba Christmas is a big thing across the country :exclamation: Ya never can tell

And finally, we have come to the blessed day.

Away in a manger

There are a couple of different melodies to this song. It was originally thought to have been penned by Luther himself. That is in question, but the song tells of a child, being born in the most humble of circumstances. The messiah being born in a shed, and going through life, and ultimately going to the cross because of love.

Merry Christmas everyone.

So there they are. Some favorite Christmas lyrics.

But just like an angel from the Christmas story, God sent me one last song to share with you all. My wife and I heard it for the first time yesterday going to our daughters home. We were listening to Christmas music on the radio and we knew who it was within the first line of singing.

And it just so happens it is from one of our favorite singers. Michael Johnson

We were truly blessed.

I pray that each of you keep the love of Christmas in your heart for the whole new year.

Upon A Christmas Eve
By Hugh Prestwood

I walked out on Christmas Eve to see the city lights
Up and down the avenue, I marveled at the sights
Flung out diamonds, strung out pearls, shimmered in the cold
While dark skyscrapers stood their watch on windows dressed in gold

And like a wise man chasing stars, I looked for a child
One asleep inside of me who Christmas once beguiled
Through the falling snow I tracked a fading memory
Until decked out in ragged clothes, an angel came to me

She smiled and said the one you’ve lost is easy to retrieve
All you need to bring him home is something to believe
Then a thousand bells rang out announcing Christmas morn
And at that moment I did feel the child in me reborn

So fill your heart with love tonight and wear it on your sleeve
For all good things are possible upon a Christmas Eve
For all good things are possible upon a Christmas Eve

Once again, not sure who made the video.

Excellent! Christmas kinda ‘got past’ me this year - I’ll try to remember these lyrics as the next one approaches.

Ahhh, Such good lyrics. My thanks to the Coincidence of Angels, and to you for following through.

It inspired my muse to bring me this:

*It will be through your deeds,

And through your every word,

That the Forever Child in your heart,

Is forever understood.*

“Can we have just one more like this? A song from the days when Jesus was called the first hippie?” I asked her.

Okay. Just one more.

I wonder if this Christmas they’ll begin to understand
The Jesus that they celebrate is much more than a man.
'Cause the way the world is I don’t see how people can deny
The only way to save us was for Jesus Christ to die.

And I know that if St. Nicholas was here he would agree
That Jesus gave the greatest gift of all to you and me.
They led him to the slaughter on a hill called Calvary,
And mankind was forgiven when they nailed him to the tree.

But most of all the children they’re the ones I hope will learn
That Jesus is our savior and he’s going to return.
And Christmas isn’t just a day and all days aren’t the same,
Perhaps they’ll think about the word and see it spells his name

And I know that if St. Nicholas was here he would agree
That Jesus gave the greatest gift of all to you and me.
They led him to the slaughter on a hill called Calvary,
And mankind was forgiven, mankind was forgiven,
We were all forgiven when they nailed him to the tree.

So, Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas. Merry Christmas.
Hoo-hoo. Ooo-ooh.

I wonder if this Christmas they’ll begin to understand?

Thanks Eleutheros :exclamation:
