MacDonald

From Diary of an Old Man, entry for July 31:

“To try to feel is but to court despair.
To dig for a sun within a garden-fence;
Who does thy will, O God, he lives upon thy air.”

Nice Words, DaveB. I assume this is from the diary of MacDonald - the universalist. And not “the farmer” or the “corporate Hamburger chain” - right? :laughing:

Right - plus the title should read “Diary of an Old Soul” - not 'Old Man"

Speaking as a member of the Eastern Orthodox Church, George MacDonald is easily my favorite non-Orthodox religious writer. (C. S. Lewis is my second, which is not surprising considering just how “MacDonaldian” he was.)

Favorite MacDonald works (in no particular order):
Lilith
Phantastes
his sermons, generally (with “Justice” the best)

Favorite Lewis works (in order!):
Perelandra
Till We Have Faces
Out of the Silent Planet
Miracles

(It will be noticed that I do not place That Hideous Strength in my list of favorites. I think that the real Celestial Trilogy includes the above two and begins with David Lindsay’s A Voyage to Arcturus.)

Everything you listed is a great read!
