St Gregory of Nyssa on the Trinity

St Gregory was one of the great theological lights of the fourth century. His Letter to Ablabius was a an important contribution to the settlement of the trinitarian dogma of the Church.

I have been posting a series of pieces of the Ad Ablabium and have just posted my concluding piece, which may be of interest to the brethren: “Are Christians polytheists?” You may find it of interest.

Gregory is sometimes said to be a “social trinitarian.” This, I believe, is an inaccurate description. So one thing I do in this piece is to briefly contrast his position with the social trinitarianism of Richard Swinburne, one of the leading analytic philosophers of religion. I do not see how Swinburne can be called anything but a tritheist. What makes this especially interesting is the fact that Swinburne is now Eastern Orthodox. I do not know how he reconciles his views with those of the Church Fathers.
