John 1:9 The True Light who was coming into the world, or...

the true light who enlightens all those coming into the world?
Most translations seem to make ἐρχόμενον modify τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν, but is there any reason why it shouldn’t modify πάντα ἄνθρωπον, such that the sentence would read “(He) was the true light who enlightens all men coming into the world”? The neuter participle is used another two occasions in the chapter and each time modifies the object. Reading this this afternoon I thought it might be a more universalist reading.

1:9 ἦν τὸ φῶς τὸ ἀληθινόν ὃ φωτίζει πάντα ἄνθρωπον ἐρχόμενον εἰς τὸν κόσμον

It is indeed fully inclusive as the NKJV has it…

Even the alternative rendering doesn’t really change that basic fact either…

Or, as the Peshitta has it…

God indeed “…has set eternity in their hearts…” – it’s coming to that revelation, as was graced upon Paul of “Christ in you” that engenders great hope i.e., assurance of LIFE.

Cheers Davo, I will post soon my universalist reading of the whole Gospel
